When life becomes chaotic, what do you do?
Many of us fall into a rut.
Running around constantly to appease our career and family needs, but unless you take time to care for yourself; life will drain you mentally and physically. That’s why it is so important to know how to kick back and relax!
There’s no shame in needing to take a break every now and again, but there is always an efficient way to fit in some well-deserved “me” time. The only problem is figuring out when.
The benefits of relaxing can be outstanding on your physical and mental health.
In the article, Relaxation techniques: Try these steps to reduce stress, explains how certain techniques can improve your health: “Slowing heart rate, lowering blood pressure, slowing your breathing rate, improving digestion, maintaining normal blood sugar levels, reducing activity of stress hormones, increasing blood flow to major muscles, reducing muscle tension and chronic pain, improving concentration and mood, improving sleep quality, lowering fatigue, reducing anger and frustration, boosting confidence to handle problem” (Mayo Clinic Staff).
Relaxation techniques have been proven to beyond beneficial to many areas of life. So, by applying some of these steps to your life, you will be able to manage your schedule to your personal needs and desires.
Solution One: Try Breathing Exercises
- Breathing exercises can be used at any time throughout your day. Whenever things start becoming overwhelming and stress begins to take its’ toll on you, practice a simple three-count breathing exercise.
- Begin by finding a place to sit down away from commotion and start by taking a smooth three second breath in, hold for a second, then control by let ting all your breath out for three seconds, and hold for an additional second before repeating again.
- By completing five or more repetitions, as needed, you allow yourself the opportunity to slow down to regather your thoughts and flip to a positive mindset.
- This is the first step in learning how to kick back and relax.
Solution Two: Listen to Soothing Music during your commutes
When there is just no free time to be found, sometimes you just must make the time you have work for you. Whether it be during your alone time on the drive to work or in route to dropping off the kids at school, music can have profound effects on your brain.
The article, Releasing Stress Through the Power of Music, explains the effects music can take on your brain: “Music can have a profound effect on both the emotions and the body. Faster music can make you feel more alert and concentrate better. Upbeat music can make you feel more optimistic and positive about life. A slower tempo can quiet your mind and relax your muscles, making you feel soothed while releasing the stress of the day. Music is effective for relaxation and stress management” (University of Nevada, Reno).
Stress management is a key part of handling the curveballs life throws at you daily, so in return being able to identify the specific type of music that will benefit you the most is significant in improving your mentality.

Solution Three: Connect with Nature
For many of us, nature is often overlooked in our daily routine and we fall into the habit of only focusing on the tasks that proceed us daily. By stepping out of our routines and making moments to take in the beauty that surrounds, stress can smoothly transfer into relaxation.
Optional ways to achieve this relaxation can be through going on walks, taking a few hours to find gorgeous hiking spots in your near area, and even by taking a few minutes throughout the day to look at pictures of nature.
Nature soundtracks have been proven to take outstanding effects on the subconscious part of your brain.
